As part of GENIVAR’s renovation of the Pavillon de la jeunesse, the arena’s capacity will be doubled to 5,000 seats. A steel structure will be installed on top of the existing roof, enabling the removal of the internal support columns. The ice rink’s concrete foundation will be demolished and rebuilt, while new spectator stands will be constructed. Stage support equipment will be installed at one end of the arena. To ensure seismic stability, the building will be longitudinally supported in part by embedded reinforced concrete columns and in part by steel structure. Crosswise support will be exclusively provided by the embedded concrete columns. Innovation The rink width can be adjusted to Olympic or “North American” size by means of a retractable strip. Challenge To ensure that the external steel structure does not compromise the integrity of the existing structure due to temperature variations.
