PROJECTS AND PROFESSIONAL ACTIVITIES
Dr. Sheldon Zemell has over 25 years of experience in engineering computing during which
he has developed numerous computer programs and contributed over 15 publications. Sheldon
ran computing and research departments for MacLaren and Fenco (17 years combined) and
Lavalin (3 years) – with projects around the globe. Since joining EHG, he has analysed over
fifty water pumping and distribution systems as well as continuing development on EHG's
HAMMER surge model, which he has linked to several commercially available steady-state
models. Representative projects include:
Hydraulic Transient and Numerical Analysis
Hydraulic transient and risk analysis for entire Toronto and York Region water
network (14 zones); similar work for Peel Region and Ottawa wastewater collection systems. Water
distribution for Riverview Heights and Block 17 in York Region. Regional water supply system for
St. John's, Newfoundland (population 200,000+) and Thunder Bay (450,000+).
Differential surge tank at Bennett Bridge hydro station for Niagara Mohawk Power
Corporation, New York State, USA (30 MW at a head of 80 m with a 2.7 km, 3650 mm penstock). Load
rejection at several hydro stations (e.g. Topsail, Lookout Brook) for Barber Hydraulic Turbine in Newfoundland.
Nuclear cooling water systems at Gentilly II and Bruce B for Canatom and AECL
(Ontario). Pump-turbine units for Delaney hydroelectric Project, Quebec. Investigation of penstock valve
malfunction during filling at Niagara Falls hydro plant for Ontario Power Generation (formerly Ontario Hydro).
Dynamic pipeline and shut-down model for 65,000 USGPM Boulder Valley dewatering
plant to avoid spills (Nevada). Slurry pumping transient pressures and forces for Barrick Roaster (Nevada).
Thermo-hydraulic transient model and transient forces for UGS-ALP plant for QIT Fer et Titane, Tracy, Québec.
