PROJECTS AND PROFESSIONAL ACTIVITIES
Shelley Kuan is a water resources engineer with 10 years of design
experience in urban stormwater management (SWM), highway drainage, river
engineering, flow monitoring and site plans.
Hydrology and Hydraulics
Applied computer models for flood mapping, river hydraulics and hydrology,
channel, storm sewer outfall and culvert hydraulics. Prepared design reports
for approval agencies such as Conservation Authorities, MNR, MOEE &
MTO and Municipalities:
Neebing/McIntyre Floodway, Thunder Bay
Caledon Creek East, Caledon
Paterson Drain, New Tecumseth
Fonthill Bridge, Markham |
Markland Woods Legal Case (Etobicoke Creek)
St-Marys Rapid Study, Sault Ste. Marie
Lambton Landfill Site Watershed Study, Sarnia
Alcona Bridge, Innisfill |

Stormwater Management and Sewer Design
Retrofit of South Pond in Markham to provide quality control for existing
and planned development. Designed detention pond, on-site storage, catch
basin inlet control and dual drainage system using both computer modelling
and conventional manual approaches:
Markham Center West(200 ha)
Orsi Subdivision (30 ha), Newmarket
Riverview Sub. (15 ha), Vaughan
Denison North Sub. (10 ha), Markham
Parkerhill Sub. (1 ha), Mississauga
Armadale East Sub. (77 ha), Markham
Bay-con. Sub. (30 ha), Caledon
Goodwood Watershed (350 ha) |
Wallace Mills Sub. (60 ha), Innisfill
Goodwood SWM/Infiltration Pond (25 ha).
Willowick Sub. (16 ha), Newmarket
Pancol Sub. (10 ha), New Tecummseth
Ronto/Police Sub. (18 ha), Newmarket
Moeller Sub. (40 ha), Richmond Hill
Pond Watershed (300 ha), Markham |
On Site Detention Analysis
Designed parking lot and roof storage, overland flow paths and storm
sewers and outlets for over 30 site drainage plans using both computer
modelling and conventional manual approaches:
Costco, Markham
BMW Benz, Vaughan
Motorola Site (Markham)
Marydale, Markham |
Magic Wok, Markham
Toyota, Newmarket
SuperCom I & II, Markham
Chiavatti, Markham |
Maryville Centre, Toronto
Volvo, Markham
Toshiba, Markham
Vedic Centre, Markham |
Highway Drainage
Rapid hydraulic design of the Lawrence Avenue culvert crossing of Wilket
Creek to enable emergency repair by City of Toronto and of 3 bridge openings
including the Birchmount Extension for Markham. Analysis and right-sizing
of over 50 culvert crossings, median drainage optimization and impact of 16
Mile Ck. bridge piers for West Extension of HWY 407. Analysis of over 70
culverts for HWY 5 in Halton for MTO.
Municipal Water Supply, Waste Water and Water Hammer
Developed a land use database and model for generating and forecasting
water demand for water distribution analysis (FLOWGEN). Performed regional
flood and drought frequency analysis for water supply systems. Hydraulic
analyses of sewage and water treatment plants, pumping stations, forcemains
and reservoirs:
- Woodward Waste Water Treatment Plant, Hamilton (headworks expansion
and review).
- City-wide Waterhammer analysis of the Thunder Bay Water Distribution
System.
- Tri-city Water Distribution and Supply Study, Waterloo.
- Downsview Base and Secondary Plan Area - Water Supply System for
Canada Lands
- Al Masane Reservoir, surface water supply, Saudi Arabia
- Humber Treatment Plant WAS and Co-generation Studies, Toronto
- Britannia/Barrhaven Pumping Station, Ottawa-Carleton
- Pickering/Ajax Water Supply and High Lift Pumping Station, Durham
- Orangeville Sewage Pumping Station and Forcemain, Orangeville
- Shekak Hydro Power, Ontario
- Cambridge Well Pumping Water System, Cambridge
- Western Beaches Tunnel, Toronto (pre-design).
MODELLING EXPERTISE
Computer Modelling:
Detailed expertise with several computer models such as HEC-RAS,
OTTHYMO (SWMHYMO), OTTSWMM-EXTRAN, FESWMS-2DH (2 dimensional model), MOBED,
WATERNET, WATERWORKS, EPANET and HAMMER.
Physical Modelling:
Models (scale) of chlorine mixing for two reservoirs.
